hike #30

Bock Harvey Forest Preserve and Riemen Woods, Enfield

Meet-up:  125 Rockwell Road, Enfield, between Hines Road and Porter Hill Road

Map

This is a very attractive hike that runs through a nice mix of fields and woods.  Much of the walk is relatively easy, though there’s a steeper uphill section across open fields in the first stage.  It includes a section that’s a big deal in forest circles because it contains some of the oldest sugar maples in New York State.  You can see a Preserve map and read details about the old woods hereThe historic parcel was donated for public use a few years ago by our own regular hiker Dave B.

We start by hiking south from the parking area on Rockwell Road to the Locust lean-to. After re-grouping there we take preserve trails in combination with the FLT to Porter Hill Road, where we enter Riemen Woods.  Here we have a bit of a steep climb for a while.  The quality of the woods here differs from what we see on the other parts of this hike.  You can read about the Riemen Woods preserve here.

After leaving Riemen Woods and returning to the Bock Harvey Preserve we usually do another out-and-back section on the FLT through woods and open fields to another point on Rockwell Rd to get our full two hour hike.

A more detailed map of this section of the FLT in paper or digital form may be found on map sheet M16, available for purchase through the Finger Lakes Trail Conference at:

While the videos content creator has you hiking from Porter Hill Rd, this short video clip gives a good overview on the Preserve:
