Cook-out at Roger’s

Our food coordinator Liz sent me this note to post here:

Hello Hikers (past, present and future).

Great picnic this year.  First I want to thank everyone who came, helped, or supported us in many ways.  Thank you.   Because of your generosity,  I will be giving Steven and Susan a nice check which will pay for the website domain, other hiking related hidden costs, and a couple of meals out at their favorite restaurants.

Other comments I would like to pass on:

1) What do you think of changing the name of this event to the “hikers’ reunion” rather than hikers cookout?  It really is a gathering of past and present hikers and I would like to encourage more people who have been associated with the group to feel welcome at this special party.

2) Multiple people commented to me that there were fewer salads/side dishes than before.  Of course, no one went away hungry and the chicken was the star of the show, but just wanted you to know that many people appreciate and look forward to the variety of other foods as well.

3)  Did anyone take a picture of Steven in his super-hero armor? Since we did not get a picture of him in a swim suit this year, this is even better!  Please share.   For a little fun, shall we come up with a name for him in his new persona? Here are a few ideas just to get you started:   S-S Trail Cruiser (for Super Steve)?   Ninja Trailblazer?

Thanks again, everyone.

See you on the path.  Liz

Report to Hikers: 2018 cook-out at Roger’s

The preparations

Early afternoon —  noon to 2:30

Head count:   Probably more than 80.  You can see the turnout of the lunch crowd in the photos.  Tiger and I went home at 2:30  —  as we were preparing to leave, a steady stream of new people was arriving  —  and there were still seven hours to go.

Lovely day.  The pond was 73.

While the main group of hikers charged up the steep trail to the look-out, four of us stayed on Bald Hill Road and just walked south on it for an hour in order to get a reduced amount of exercise.  It was an unusually lovely morning and the road was a gorgeous place to stroll along

This is one of just three hikes where we can run into horses  —  always a high point, IMO

This was my first time back into the woods since I fell down on a Saturday hike on May 12.  My recovery was complicated by the fact that I have an underlying genetic brain disorder that causes balance problems and dizziness.  I’ve had a bumpy recovery  —  at the low point I couldn’t walk well enough to go out of the house, and I had to get around inside using a borrowed rolling walker.  It was really great to be back out with the hikers!

We had a lot of fun at Hopshire  —  three hikers were marking their birthdays.  Leigh Ann, center in pale  hat, had the best birthday story  —  when she was 25 she was a very active cave explorer and on her 25th birthday she and some fellow cavers were lost in a large cave complex in Indiana  —  took several days for them to be rescued.
